Have a wonderful happily-ever-after in your new home, Velvet!
Sweet, gentle, 7 year old, black, standard poodle. Velvet is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, tested negative for parasites, current on preventatives, and had recent dental cleaning and good blood work results. She is energetic, loves going for walks, comfortable in her kennel, very well housebroken, loves being petted and brushed, and gets along well with all people and other dogs (no cats). This girl is ready to go! See full description below.
Velvet is a seven year old black Standard Poodle. She is tall, about 24” at the shoulder, and is presently slimming down from being overweight at 65 pounds. Velvet is a sweet, quirky girl. For the first four years of her life, she lived on a farm and her owner loved her very much but the rest of the family didn’t care for her “spookiness” – she didn’t want to be petted by strangers and seemed to find lots of everyday things to be threatening and scary. Her owner found a new home for Velvet and her very best Poodle friend, but the new family had a beloved pet cat, as well. As it turns out, Velvet does NOT like cats, unless it is with ketchup and a side of fries… so Velvet came back to the farm. Next, she went to college. She spent a semester in the kennel at an area school. It was boot camp for Velvet, in terms of being exposed to LOTS of different people every day. In three months, she made tremendous strides, looking forward to each new caretaker with a wagging tail, although she seemed to find the oddest things to be scary, especially ceiling fixtures of any sort. At the end of the semester, a wonderful woman adopted Velvet and took her to her country home. The woman had an older Standard Poodle, who calmly welcomed Velvet, and a small mop of a Havanese puppy, who decided Velvet was her own personal chew toy. The woman and the three dogs lived happily together for several years; with few changes in environment, Velvet thrived, although the barn cats, as well as the local bunnies and squirrels, did have to be very, very careful not to cross her path. Sadly, Velvet’s owner learned a few months ago that she had cancer, and, when it became clear that she would not win her battle, she made arrangements for her animals. The little mop would go to a dear friend, and the two Standard Poodles would go to Tri-State Poodle Rescue to find new homes. Velvet’s owner passed away the last week in August. At about the same time, we learned the older Poodle had cancer as well; we let her go to be with her beloved mistress. So now it is just Velvet. She has been examined by the Vet and everything looks good, although she did have a few sebaceous cysts which have been removed, not unusual in middle-aged Standard Poodles. She is up-to-date on all her vaccinations, tested negative for intestinal parasites and heartworm and is current on prevention, just had a dental cleaning, and is freshly groomed. She is a pretty dog and extremely affectionate once she gets to know you. Her housetraining is very solid. She is very cooperative with the Vet and the groomer. It seems likely that Velvet’s “skittishness,” “spookiness,” and “shyness” have something to do with the way she sees the world. Her eyes seem healthy but they aren’t totally “normal;” as a result, she is sensitive to light. This may also account for her nervousness about things over her head – ceiling fans, low-hanging light fixtures, etc. all take her a while to get used to. The light poles on the river walk with their hanging flower baskets were VERY scary… Velvet would have pulled out of her collar and run away if she could have. She is cautious of new people, but seems to accept them pretty quickly, and that includes children. Many shy dogs don’t care for men, but Velvet adores them! Despite her fearfulness, Velvet has NEVER show any sign of aggression toward people or inclination to bite… she just wants to escape. And, of course, while she seems to do fine with small dogs, any other small animal is prey and fair game, as far as Velvet as concerned. She has killed cats and will not hesitate to do so again if she has the chance. So now this loving, pretty, but a bit unusual girl is looking for her next Angel – a home that is understanding about her quirks and willing to accept and love her for all that she has to offer.
